The properties of y'all

I recently read a post from one of Summer's fellow bloggers; in it the writer misspelled the popular Southern word "y'all". Well, in truth it wasn't misspelt... just not punctuated correctly.

I enjoy the mechanics of Southern dialect, and find it hard to pass on the opportunity to add my two cents when the language of the South is frowned upon or misunderstood. So...here's a nickel's worth.

"Y'all"

In order for Northerners to fully understand this word, it is first necessary to know the properties of the word. Much like life in the South, it's really quite a simple concept. The word is a combination of two words--you and all. It makes much more sense than the word won't, which we are all aware is the combination of will and not. Who came up with that one? Shouldn't that be willn't (there's another one --or two (should-not, and there-is).

Quite frankly, I like the way "you all" sounds just as it is...sounds quite Southern without combining the two, don't ya' think?

In case you have been recently hit on the head, and are unaware of what I am referring to, it is the recommend that I need to remove. It's really quite embarrassing...kind of like hanging my panties to dry on the front lawn. Please help! Love Mom.
